Immigration Update June 2017

The big news is that the Conservatives clung on to power in the general election on 8 June (by dint of forming a pact or arrangement with the Democratic Unionist Party) and no dramatic changes in immigration policy are expected.

As per the Queen’s Speech, yet another new Immigration Act is expected somewhere down the line, which will deal with the situation of EEA migrants after Brexit has occurred.

In connection with which, the Government has made a vague undertaking to achieve the “tens of thousands” net annual migration figure by the end of this Parliament. This Parliament was expected to endure until 2022 but that may not be so certain now because of the Government’s lack of an overall majority in the House of Commons.

And the Home Office has introduced a charge of £5.48 for email immigration queries for people outside the UK.
